Joseph Davenport (1781-1849) and Lucy of Swettenham

Joseph Davenport (1781-1849) was the youngest son of Daniel Davenport and lived his life as a small farmer in Swettenham. In the 1839 tithe map of Swettenham, Joseph owned a house and garden ( 2Rods 32 perches) and 3 small crofts (2 Rods 36 Perches) with an annual rent of five shillings three pence. He married Lucy Buckley (1784- 1861) from Withington at Prestbury in 1803. They married late in life - raising nine children at Swettenham, Daniel (1804-64),Anne (1806), Joseph (1808), Edward (1810), Lucy (1813), Jonas (1815), Davies (1818), Denise (1821), Martha (1825) . In the Swettenham parish registers for the births of his children, Joseph is referred to as a laborer residing at Swettenham. Joseph was listed in the 1841 census of Swettenham living with his wife Lucy and two youngest daughters Denise and Martha. Joseph died in 1849, and his wife Lucy in the 1851 census was living with a family in Swettenham as a widow and servant.

Daniel Davenport (1804-64) was born and raised in Swettenham. He married Mary (1803-1860) about 1828, and raised five children Anne(1829),Elizabeth (1832), Lucy (1834-1907, Catherine((1836-1909), George (1838). The children were baptised at Swettenham, and their father Daniel was described as living at Davenport and Someford Radnor. By the 1841 census, Daniel and his family were living at Brereton, and in the 1851 and 1861 census the residence is "Smethwick Green" Brereton. Daniel died in 1864 and Mary in 1860.  Their son George relocated to the Staffordshire Potteries about 1860, and married Mary about 1863. In the 1871 and 1881 census of Burslem, George is described as a carpenter - with seven children. Our research could not find any members of this family in the 1891 and 1901 UK census, and so we presume they emigrated.  Our story on Daniel and Mary's family continued through their two daughters Lucy Davenport (1834-1907) and Catherine Davenport (1836-1909) who lived at Brereton, a neighboring town to Swettenham. Lucy married John Booth in 1855 at Astbury and in the census returns lived at Brereton, except in the 1871 census when they lived at Arclid. They raised 11 children, including John Booth (1867 - 1900). Catherine Davenport (1836-1909) married George Griffiths at Brereton in 1862 and raised three children, Mary (1865), Elizabeth (1869) and Clement (1871). The census returns show that Catherine and George Griffiths lived at "Smethwick Green" Brererton. Cousins John Booth (1867-1900) and Elizabeth Griffiths (1869) married at Brereton in 1889 and had four children at Brereton before John's death in 1900. Janet Griffin's husband is a descendant of  Daniel and Mary.

Joseph Davenport (1808-) was born and raised in Swettenham. He married Mary about 1829, and they had their first child Jonas Davenport (1830) whilst living at Swettenham  - Joseph was described as a laborer. The next two children were born at Church Hulme - Davies Davenport (1832) and George Davenport (1834), but by the 1841 census they had moved to Brereton where their youngest daughter Eliza (1842) was born. Joseph's wife Mary died in 1844 at Brereton. Joseph was living at Brereton for the 1851 census with his son George, but we lose track of Joseph after this. Davies Davenport and George Davenport both moved to the Staffordshire potteries where they married and raised families.

Edward Davenport (1810-68) was born in Swettenham. He married Ann about 1830 and they were living at Marton for the birth of their first two children -Charles Davenport (1832-95) and Emma Davenport (1835). It was possible whilst a resident of Marton, that Edward was a witness to his uncle James Davenport (1861-1833) will. Edward and his family moved to Blackden about 1836 and in the 1841 census of Blackden, Edward is described as a farmer. About 1842, the family had moved to Hulme Walfieldm, and in the 1851 census of Hulme Walfield - Bank farm, he was also a farmer. However by the 1861 census he had moved to Over Peover - Meredale Farm of 113 acres. Ann died in 1866 and Edward in 1868 - both were buried at Marton, along with their children Isaac (1843/4), Emma (1835-57) and Charles (1832-95). Their daughter Lois Davenport (1837-1906) married Henry Bolshaw from Over Peover in 1859 and raised a family of eight children at Over Peover on a farm of 22 acres (1861 and 1871 census), and then moved to Marton about 1875 where they lived on Messuage farm (60 acres) in the 1881 and 1891 census. In the mid 1890's Henry and Lois Bolshaw moved to Salmsbury, Lancashire with several of their children. Lydia Bolshaw (1840-1875) married Edwin Jepson (1834-1901) a farmer from Capesthorne. They raised their children at Capesthorne. When Lydia died in 1875, Edwin remarried to Elizabeth. Rebecca Davenport (1841) married John Taylor from Marton in 1865. In the 1881 census they were living at Marlfield farm, Marton. Ann Davenport (1850-1907) married and had a child George Tompkinson in 1867 at Over Peover, and then remarried her cousin Richard Davenport (1848-1908) at Prestbury in 1868. They raised their children at Marton on Gorsley Green farm.

Jonas Davenport (1815- ) married Ann Critchley at Astbury in 1836. We have no other information on this family

Davies Davenport (1818- 1891) married Sarah Bibbey at Astbury in 1839 and was a gardener living at Somerford. Census returns of Somerfod show that he had seven children.

Denise Davenport (1821) married James Mellor at Gawsworth in 1842.
